For Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October
A dry Saturday in the south before a soaking Sunday north of the Alps
Friday brings showers across most of the Alps, heaviest in the northern French Alps and western Switzerland. Saturday is the calm in between, dry across Ticino and the Italian Alps. On Sunday a big wet band runs along the northern and western Alps, while the south stays dry and La Palma stays perfect all weekend.
Ticino is the place this weekend
Ticino has the best ground in the Alps right now. Monte Tamaro sits at 71, Arosio at 70, Ascona at 69, with Monte Lema and Monte Bar just behind. All are in hero dirt.
Friday brings 2 to 5 mm, then Saturday and Sunday look dry. Ascona and Monte Bar drain faster than most of our parks and will shrug off Friday quickly. Expect a breezy Saturday on Tamaro, with gusts near 60 km/h. The exception is Airolo at the northern end, which takes around 21 mm on Sunday.
Italian Alps and Liguria dry out
Finale Ligure is at 68 and dries out faster than almost any park we track. After about a millimetre on Friday it stays dry, with mild highs around 13 to 15°C. Saturday is windy there, with gusts to around 75 km/h.
In Trentino, Friday brings a few millimetres, then the weekend is dry. Val di Sole and Paganella are soft now but drain well and should firm up. Cortina and Pinzolo hold water, so they stay soft longer. In the west, La Thuile gets around 46 mm on Sunday, and Livigno is muddy.
Switzerland: Saturday window, Sunday washout
Many Swiss parks start in hero dirt: Verbier 69, Zug and Bellwald 67, Bern Gurten 66, Zermatt 65. Friday brings around 5 to 14 mm across the lowlands, Saturday only a few millimetres.
Sunday is wet nearly everywhere: around 60 mm at Champéry, 50 mm at Morgins, Brunni-Alpthal and Hoch Ybrig, 40 mm at Biel. Champéry and Morgins already hold water badly. Zermatt sees under a millimetre on Friday and drains fast, so Friday or Saturday is a real option if you can live with highs of 3 to 6°C. Saas-Grund stays dry until Sunday but is below freezing on Saturday.
French Alps: wet north, rideable south
The northern French parks take the worst of it. Morzine gets around 33 mm Friday and 69 mm Sunday, Les Gets around 69 mm Sunday. Lac Blanc sees gusts near 120 km/h on Sunday.
Further south, Serre Chevalier at 63 and Les Orres at 59 drain faster than nearly all our parks. Saturday looks dry at both, and Sunday brings only a few millimetres.
Austria, Graubünden and Germany stay soft
Austria starts wet or muddy everywhere, with rain on all three days in the west; Brandnertal takes around 32 mm Sunday. In Carinthia, Gerlitzen and Ossiacher See dry up on Sunday, but from a wet start.
In Graubünden, Poschiavo at 47 is the exception: it drains fast and stays dry Saturday and Sunday. In Germany, Willingen at 62 and Winterberg get 15 to 18 mm Saturday and over 20 mm Sunday, with strong gusts.
Further afield, still perfect
All four La Palma parks are in hero dirt, dry all weekend at 21 to 27°C. La Palma South leads at 71, with gusts to around 55 km/h. Rocky Mountain in New Zealand stays dry at 60, windy on Sunday. Whistler is good for Friday, before around 9 mm on Saturday.
Our call
Head south. Ticino and Finale Ligure are the picks for Saturday and Sunday, with Zermatt or the southern French parks as a Saturday option if you accept the cold.
