For Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October

Hero dirt holds in the high south while rain soaks the north on Saturday

Saturday brings a band of rain along the northern side of the Alps, from the Chablis through central Switzerland into Austria and Germany, with up to around 13 mm in places. Upper Valais, Aosta, Trentino and the Dolomites stay largely dry and in hero condition. Sunday is quieter almost everywhere, with only light amounts forecast outside Germany and Carinthia.

Valais, Aosta and the Dolomites stay prime

Zermatt and Breuil-Cervinia both score 67, with Aletsch Arena on 66. Saturday brings at most around 1 mm, and Cervinia none at all. Zermatt drains faster than most of our parks and sits on one of the sunniest slopes. Saas-Grund is also prime at 63, but cold: around 6°C on Saturday and just below freezing early Sunday.

Further east, Poschiavo and Scuol sit on 66, Reschen on 63, Paganella and La Thuile on 62, Bormio on 60, Pinzolo on 57 and Cortina on 55. Rain chances on Saturday are real but amounts tiny, and Sunday looks mostly dry. Paganella and Pinzolo hold water more than most, so a passing shower will linger there.

Saturday: a wet band along the northern Alps, with the south largely dry.

A wet Saturday north of the ridge

Central Switzerland takes the brunt, with nearly every park already at 20. Höhoren Wildspitz gets around 13 mm and gusts to 65 km/h; Zürich Uetliberg, Hoch Ybrig and Zug all see 11 to 13 mm. Grindelwald-Wengen and Mürren-Schilthorn hold water among the most of our parks, and Mürren is already muddy at 14, so expect both to stay soft. Uetliberg and Zug drain quickly and will recover sooner, though Sunday adds another 2 to 3 mm.

To the west, Champéry gets around 9 mm, Morgins 6 and Bern Gurten 5. Across the border, Morzine, Châtel, Les Gets and La Clusaz see 7 to 8 mm. Lac Blanc is hero dirt at 59 now but takes around 6 mm and gusts to 68 km/h on Saturday.

Austria splits west and east

In Tyrol, Sölden leads at 68 and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis sits on 59. Both get around 3 mm on Saturday, then Sunday looks mostly dry, and Sölden sheds water better than most. Brandnertal takes around 8 mm on ground that holds water, so it stays wet.

Carinthia is wetter. Gerlitzen is prime at 64 but faces around 11 mm Saturday and 7 more Sunday. Ossiacher See gets 3 to 6 mm each day, Schladming less. Over the border, Maribor Pohorje scores 60, stays dry and 17°C on Saturday, and drains fast ahead of around 2 mm Sunday.

Ticino and the southern French Alps dry out

Ticino stays dry on Saturday with little on Sunday, but scores lag. Airolo is best at 53; Ascona and Monte Bar are still wet but drain faster than most. Finale Ligure sits on 21 yet stays dry and warm, near 19°C, on very fast-draining ground. In the southern French Alps, Serre Chevalier, Les Orres and Les 2 Alpes are wet now but dry and among our sunniest, so worth watching.

Sunday: light amounts across most of the Alps, with wetter spells in Germany and Carinthia.

Germany stays wet and windy

Willingen is best at 30. Geißkopf and Winterberg get around 8 mm Saturday and 5 to 6 more Sunday, with gusts up to 77 km/h. Both hold water more than average.

Further afield: La Palma and Whistler

La Palma is dry at 76 to 81, led by La Palma South. A few millimetres are forecast with low chances, on the fastest-draining ground we track. Whistler is variable at 39, dry both days: windy and 7°C Saturday, calm and 13°C Sunday.

Our call

Head south of the main ridge: Zermatt, Breuil-Cervinia and the Trentino parks offer the best dirt all weekend. If you are in Austria, Tyrol on Sunday beats Carinthia.
